Finding the Perfect Cat Litter for Kittens and Adult Cats
When selecting cat litter, understanding your feline’s needs is crucial. Here’s a guide to help you choose the best litter and litter boxes for both kittens and adult cats
Starting with Breeder’s Litter
When bringing a new kitten or cat home, start with the type of litter the breeder has been using. This minimizes stress and confusion for your new arrival, as they are already familiar with that litter. Once your kitten or cat has settled in, you can gradually transition to a new litter. Mix a small amount of the new litter with the breeder's litter and gradually increase the proportion of new litter over a week or two. This gradual transition helps prevent litter box aversion and ensures a smoother adjustment.
Choosing the Right Cat Litter
After experimenting with a dozen different litters, I’ve settled on Clump & Seal Slide Platinum by Arm & Hammer for adult cats. It excels at controlling odors and makes clean-up easy. For kittens, however, clumping litter isn’t ideal. I start with Tractor Supply Pelletized Bedding for Horses and Small Animals. It’s inexpensive and effective for young kittens. Just be aware that large pellets can sometimes confuse kittens, who might think any bowl is a litter box, including their dry food dish! Once your kittens have mastered using the litter box, you can switch to the adult litter of your choice.
The Importance of Multiple Litter Boxes
Cats are territorial creatures and enjoy marking their territory. Providing multiple litter boxes in different areas of your home can greatly enhance their happiness and reduce stress. A good rule of thumb is to have one litter box per cat plus one extra. This ensures every cat has access to a clean box and helps reduce competition or territorial disputes.
Litter Box Placement
Place litter boxes in separate, easily accessible locations away from your cat’s feeding and sleeping areas. Opt for quiet spots where your cat feels secure. Proper placement not only maintains a clean environment but also respects your cat’s natural behaviors and preferences.
By starting with the breeder’s litter, gradually transitioning to a new type if desired, and providing multiple litter boxes, you’ll create a comfortable and stress-free environment for your new kitten or cat. With these tips, you can keep your feline friend happy and your home clean.
Litter Box Maintenance
For a single cat, scooping the litter box once a day may be sufficient. However, with multiple cats, I scoop the litter boxes 3-4 times a day to keep odors in check and maintain a hygienic environment. It’s also important to completely clean and sanitize the litter box once a week. Empty the litter, wash the box with warm water and mild soap, and dry it thoroughly before adding fresh litter. For effective sanitizing, I use Rescue® Disinfectant Cleaner, which is excellent for killing germs and keeping the litter box hygienic. This product is also used for cleaning cattery surfaces and floors, ensuring a clean environment throughout.
